Ramana Maharshi. 1879 – 1950.

Sat in silence at the foot of Arunachala
for fifty-four years.

When asked how to find God, he said only this —

“Of all the thoughts that rise in the mind,
the thought ‘I’ is the first.”

— Ramana

Notice it now.
The sense of being I — reading this.
You know it without being told.

“The ‘I’ is always there —
in waking, dreaming, even in deep sleep.
Only its forms change.”

Find out what it is.

When any thought arises, ask —

“To whom does this thought come?”

It will come: “To me.”

Then ask —

“Who am I?”

“This is not a question to be answered.
It is a question to be held.”

Hold it. The ‘I’ will turn back on itself,
searching for its own source.
What it finds — that is what you are.

Close your eyes.

Do not imagine anything.
Do not answer with words.

Simply ask, inwardly, without hurry —

Who am I?

Wait. Watch what happens.

Something turned, or it didn't.
Either way —
you have met the question
that ends all questions.
